Active listening drills

Adopt the 80/20 rule: listen 80 percent of the time, speak 20 percent. Mirror back what you heard before responding.

Use the phrase "What I am hearing is..." to slow reactive conversations.

  • Set a five-minute timer where each partner speaks uninterrupted.
  • End reflections with curiosity: "Did I get that right?"
  • Notice body cues like crossed arms or fidgeting and invite a break if needed.

Structured check-ins

Weekly or bi-weekly touchpoints prevent small annoyances from becoming ruptures. Combine logistics with emotional temperature checks.

Try the Glow/Glitch/Grow framework: what is shining, what felt off, and what you would like to adjust next.

  • Open with appreciation before diving into friction.
  • Log action items with owners and due dates.
  • Close by affirming commitment or sharing affection.

Navigate conflict collaboratively

Assume positive intent. Most ruptures come from mismatched expectations, not malice.

State the observation, share the impact, request a new behaviour, and invite their perspective.

  • Observation"When dates run late without updates..."
  • Impact"I feel anxious and start catastrophising."
  • Request"Can we text a quick ETA or send a pre-written message?"

Signal boosting between partners

Let partners know how to reach you during emergencies, what tone to use when you are overwhelmed, and how to offer help.

Create shared language for reassurance: code words, emojis, or check-in questions to send mid-date.

  • Store mutually agreed scripts in your notes app for fast access.
  • Rehearse tough conversations when stakes are low so the muscle memory exists later.

Quick actions

  • Book a monthly calendar invite labelled "State of the Union" for each core relationship.
  • Adopt a shared note for appreciation logs so praise stays abundant.
  • Create three pre-written text templates for running late, needing space, or requesting support.
